WRITING CHALLENGE
Write
a poem or short
story, with a
maximum of 500
words, using all six
of the below cliches:
long in the tooth
a dagger in the
heart
stink to high heaven
every dog has his
day
ah, to be young and
foolish
open up a can of
worms
The day was long
and dreary
I moped around the
house
Feeling long in the
tooth.
A telephone call
from an old fling
Seemed to brighten
my day.
I invited him to
dinner
And opened up a can
of worms.
They say every dog
has his day
And this must have
been his.
He arrived in a
brand new Mercedes
Flashing around
diamond jewelry.
Emotions ran high,
evoking passion;
Ah, to be young and
foolish.
He was full of
flowery speech
And well perfected
lines;
But his self
important attitude
Began to stink to
high heavens.
I felt as if I had a
dagger in the heart
As he began his same
old tricks.
Coming to my senses,
I thought I’m not
so young
And I can certainly
correct the
foolishness.
Without regret I
sent him on his
merry way;
Contented to curl up
with a good book
And happy to be rid
of one old cliché.
